Crowns

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that completely covers a damaged, weakened, or cosmetically flawed tooth. It encases the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

Think of it as a protective helmet for your tooth—providing durability while looking completely natural. Crowns are one of the most versatile and commonly performed restorative dental procedures.

Types of Dental Crowns

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal

Combines strength of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain, suitable for front and back teeth.

All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain

Best natural color match for your teeth, ideal for front teeth and patients with metal allergies.

Gold Alloys

Extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth, often preferred for back molars.

Base Metal Alloys

Highly resistant to corrosion and wear, requires minimal tooth structure removal.

When Do You Need a Crown?

Dental crowns are recommended in various situations to protect and restore teeth:

  • Protect a weak tooth from breaking or fracturing
  • Restore an already broken or severely worn tooth
  • Cover and support a tooth with a large filling
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover misshapen or severely discolored teeth
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Complete a root canal treatment

The Crown Procedure

1

Examination & Planning

X-rays and examination to assess the tooth and surrounding bone, followed by treatment planning.

2

Tooth Reshaping

The tooth is filed down along the chewing surface and sides to make room for the crown.

3

Impression Making

Detailed impressions of your upper and lower teeth ensure the crown won't affect your bite.

4

Temporary Crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is being fabricated in the lab.

5

Permanent Crown Placement

The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is carefully fitted and permanently cemented.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Natural Appearance

Modern crowns are designed to match the color, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth.

Long-Lasting Solution

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10-15 years or even longer.

Restore Full Function

Eat, speak, and smile with confidence as crowns restore complete tooth functionality.

Prevent Further Damage

Protect weakened teeth from additional fractures or decay progression.

Caring for Your Crown

While crowns are durable, they require the same care as your natural teeth to ensure longevity:

  • Practice excellent oral hygiene—brush twice daily and floss around the crown daily
  • Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or other hard objects that could crack the crown
  • If you grind your teeth at night, consider wearing a nightguard to protect the crown
  • Attend regular dental checkups and cleanings to monitor the crown and surrounding gum tissue
  • Contact your dentist immediately if the crown feels loose or uncomfortable

How Long Do Crowns Last?

On average, dental crowns last between 10 to 15 years. However, with excellent oral hygiene and proper care, many crowns last significantly longer—some even a lifetime.

Factors that affect crown longevity include the material used, location of the crown in your mouth, your oral hygiene habits, wear-and-tear from chewing, and habits like teeth grinding or clenching.

Dental Crowns

If you have a tooth that’s been damaged, whether by trauma or cavities, dental crowns can be an ideal option to strengthen your tooth’s structure. A simple solution, crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are designed to go over the tooth all the way to your gum line. They’re custom-fitted to you and created with the strongest materials available at a local laboratory from expert technicians.

Will a Crown Work for Me?

Additionally, if you’re having a dental implant placed, a crown can be put on the implant to restore your smile and the function of your teeth. Each crown is modified to what your needs are, blending in perfectly with the appearance of your other teeth.

What’s Involved?

There are two appointments required. First, we’ll take impressions, which are then sent to our laboratory, where your crown will be fabricated. When complete, the crown is returned to Brisbane in Ocean Smiles, and we’ll welcome you back for another appointment to place it.

A Conservative Approach

At Brisbane CBD Dental Clinic, we believe in conservative dentistry and won’t recommend any treatment that isn’t essential. Even with crowns, if we feel that your tooth can survive another year or two without it, we’ll inform you so that you can decide what’s best.
