Extractions

Dental Extractions

While preserving your natural teeth is always our first priority, sometimes extraction becomes necessary for your oral health. We perform extractions with precision and care, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.

When Is Extraction Necessary?

Severe decay that cannot be restored with fillings or crowns
Advanced gum disease affecting tooth stability
Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or infection
Orthodontic treatment requiring space creation
Fractured teeth beyond repair

Types of Extractions

Simple Extraction

Performed on visible teeth in the mouth. The tooth is loosened with an instrument called an elevator, then removed with dental forceps. This procedure typically requires only local anesthesia.

Surgical Extraction

Required for teeth that haven't fully erupted or have broken below the gum line. A small incision may be made in the gum, and the tooth might be sectioned for easier removal.

What to Expect During the Procedure

1

Anesthesia Administration

Local anesthetic is applied to numb the area completely, ensuring you feel no pain during the extraction.

2

Tooth Removal

The tooth is carefully loosened and extracted. You may feel pressure but should not experience pain.

3

Socket Care

The extraction site is cleaned and may be sutured if necessary. Gauze is placed to control bleeding.

Recovery and Aftercare

Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws for 24 hours
Stick to soft foods and avoid hot beverages initially
Take prescribed pain medication as directed
Resume gentle brushing after 24 hours, avoiding the extraction site

Tooth Extractions

If you have a tooth that’s been damaged by trauma or decay, it may require extraction. Whenever possible, the Brisbane CBD Dental Clinic team will try to save your tooth by using other solutions to restore it to health. If necessary, however, we’re well-equipped to walk you through a pain-free extraction process.

The Extraction Process

First, we’ll want to make sure that we have a full understanding of your medical history. Certain conditions can mean you have a higher risk of infection, and when needed we can prescribe antibiotics to be taken before treatment begins.

When you arrive for your appointment, we’ll start by taking an X-ray of the affected tooth to plan out how best to proceed with treatment. Then, we’ll apply a numbing gel to the area, making sure your discomfort is minimised. A local anaesthetic is injected next, making you completely numb. We’ll make sure you don’t feel any pain before continuing.

After the removal is complete, we’ll pack the socket with gauze and have you bite down to apply pressure. You’ll also be given aftercare instructions, which can be found below.

Aftercare and Recovery

We want to make sure you heal as quickly and comfortably as possible. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
